Предыдущий пост сквозь годы
Два замечательных стихотворения великого Эдгара Аллана По. Я там в нескольких фразах попробовал его охарактеризовать.
Но самая большая ценность этой рубрики - не мои жалкие, беспомощные попытки "литературоведческого" анализа, несерьёзные и неубедительные, а возможность услышать, как звучит поэзия на языке оригинала.
Итак

Пятиминутка поэзии-4. Ворон. The Raven

Эдгар Аллан По. Сумрачный американский гений. Потрясающе сочетавший в себе буйство чувств, эмоций, доходящих почти до безумия, и предельно рациональный интеллектуализм. Недаром он стал родоначальником такого глубокого интеллектуального жанра, как детектив (квазидектективы с погонями и всякие маринины-донцовы в расчет не принимаются, это фуфло и туфта).
Это удивительное стихотворение, с одной стороны, выстроено абсолютно рационально, геометрично, по строгим чертежам. Однако, с другой стороны, оно до дрожи эмоционально, завораживает и потрясает.
В этом, кстати, есть немало общего с Элегией Гёте. Там тоже интенсивно обостренная эмоция, пароксизмы любви сочетаются с удивительно строго рационально выстроенной формой вплоть до нюансов, частностей, деталей и даже прозаическое слово "атмосфера", немыслимое в поэзии XIX века, оказывается органичным.
Но вернемся к "Ворону" Эдгара По.

Darkness there, and nothing more.

Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,
Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before;
But the silence was unbroken, and the darkness gave no token,

This I whispered, and an echo murmured back the word, `Lenore!'

Back into the chamber turning, all my soul within me burning,
Soon again I heard a tapping somewhat louder than before.
`Surely,' said I, `surely that is something at my window lattice;
Let me see then, what thereat is, and this mystery explore -

'Tis the wind and nothing more!'

Open here I flung the shutter, when, with many a flirt and flutter,
In there stepped a stately raven of the saintly days of yore.
Not the least obeisance made he; not a minute stopped or stayed he;
But, with mien of lord or lady, perched above my chamber door -
Perched upon a bust of Pallas just above my chamber door -
Perched, and sat, and nothing more.

Then this ebony bird beguiling my sad fancy into smiling,
By the grave and stern decorum of the countenance it wore,

Startled at the stillness broken by reply so aptly spoken,
`Doubtless,' said I, `what it utters is its only stock and store,
Caught from some unhappy master whom unmerciful disaster

But the raven still beguiling all my sad soul into smiling,
Straight I wheeled a cushioned seat in front of bird and bust and door;

Тут много русских переводов, есть даже подстрочник. Я считаю, что лучше всех перевел Михаил Зенкевич.
Куда более крупные поэты Мережковский, Бальмонт и Брюсов справились хуже, они запутались на полпути между точным переводом и созданием конгениального стихотворения, не вышло ни того, ни другого

Пятиминутка поэзии-5. Ulalume

Снова Эдгар Аллан По. Еще одно необыкновенное стихотворение этого поразительного гения, успевшего за короткий срок своей жизни, полной бедствий, невзгод и страстей, которые поэт активно усугублял при помощи алкоголя, оставить равно неизгладимый след и в поэзии, и в прозе, да еще и породившего новые жанры.
Тоже любимое, других в этой рубрике быть не может. Переводить его название - нет смысла, слово Ulalume/Улалюм ничего не значит, оно изобретено Эдгаром По.
Вновь, как и в "Вороне", звучит мотив безвременной потери юной и прекрасной возлюбленной. Этот мотив часто объясняют реакцией на смерть от туберкулеза жены поэта. Вот только... Ворон написан за 2 года до этого, и есть основания полагать, что и Ulalume/Улалюм был завершен еще до того, как несчастная супруга Эдгара По испустила последний вздох.
Готовил себя заранее? Да нет, конечно. Дело не в этом. Просто поэзия и реальность находятся в разных плоскостях, живут в разных мирах, они, конечно, связаны между собой, но связи эти сложные, непрямые, затейливые и часто непостижимые, не поддаются литературоведческому, филологическому анализу

Как всегда у Эдгара По, в этой балладе есть удивительное, неповторимое мистики, обнаженного нерва эмоций - и строгого рационализма композиции + редкие, смелые, почти немыслимые для середины XIX века рифмы


The skies they were ashen and sober;
The leaves they were crisped and sere -
The leaves they were withering and sere;
It was night in the lonesome October
Of my most immemorial year:
It was hard by the dim lake of Auber,
In the misty mid region of Weir -
It was down by the dank tarn of Auber,
In the ghoul-haunted woodland of Weir.

Here once, through and alley Titanic,
Of cypress, I roamed with my Soul -
Of cypress, with Psyche, my Soul.
These were days when my heart was volcanic

Thus I pacified Psyche and kissed her,
And tempted her out of her gloom -
